About

CIEFMA, Research Group on Structural Integrity, Reliability and Micromechanics of materials, is part of the UPC (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya).

CIEFMA researchers have been working in fatigue of structural metallic alloys, advanced ceramics, composites and coatings for more than 30 years.

CIEFMA also exhibits a wide range of competences related to its capability for successful assessment and understanding of mechanical integrity and reliability of structural materials (stainless and high-strength steels, Ti-base alloys, ceramic-metal composites and hard coatings) at different length scales. Moreover, CIEFMA has potential for implementing advanced processing towards optimizing microstructural design and/or functionality of specific material systems.

Contribution to Fatigue4Light

CIEFMA participates performing cyclic testing and also plays a relevant role regarding tasks focused on the application of advanced characterization techniques for fatigue damage initiation and propagation, in order to understand and find the physical basis of the fast fatigue methodology proposed in the project.

Experimental techniques such as AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy), FESEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy), EBSD (Electron Back Scattered Diffraction) and FIB (Focus Ion Beam) will be used for monitoring damage evolution and accumulation with the number of cycles.
